Magas nő, hatalmas vörös hajkoronával áll a hátsó sorban, és átszellemülten hallgatja a Waldgeflüster fellépését a németországi Ragnarök fesztiválon. „Ez csak Hanna lehet” – gondolom, majd bemutatkozom. Meglepődik, kicsit beszélgetünk – majd nemsokára egy interjú keretében mesél arról, hogy hogyan is lett egy templomba járó fiatal holland lányból a black metal egyik női gitárosa.

 

Lassan véget ér a 10 állomásos turnétok. Mennyire vagytok fáradtak?
Nos, nem vagyok nagyon fáradt – csak egy kicsit szomorú, hogy véget ér a turné, mert igazán sikeres volt. Minden nap sokan voltak, és a merch-eladások is nagyon jól mentek. A koncertek is nagyon jól sikerültek, úgyhogy igazából szívesen folytatnám még egy kicsit… de majd legközelebb.

 

Szeretsz turnézni?
Igen, nagyon…

 

…van esély arra, hogy ezt a turnét egy második etappal kibővítsétek, mondjuk Magyarországot is érintve?
Nos, ősszel lesz egy másik turnénk, amit hamarosan bejelentünk, de egyelőre nem mondhatok részleteket, mert meg kell várnom a hivatalos bejelentést. Nagyon várom már azt is.

 

A legutóbbi albumotok, a Veil of Death, Ruptured 2023-ban jelent meg. Milyen visszajelzéseket kaptatok az anyagról?
Szerintem nagyon jókat. Nem olvastam sok kritikát, de nagyon sok fellépésre hívtak minket, ami mindig jó jel, ezért úgy gondolom, hogy jól volt a fogadtatás.

 

Dolgozol most valamilyen új anyagon?
Igen, írom az új albumot – a címe Catharsis of the Fury lesz –, és azt tervezem, hogy ez egy nyolc vagy kilenc dalos album lesz. Jelenleg öt már megvan, szóval elég jól haladunk vele, és remélem, hogy 2027 elején meg tudjuk jelentetni.

 

 

Gondolom, meg is turnéztatjátok.
Igen.

 

Mi a feladatok megosztása a zenekaron belül? Ki mit csinál, és ki miért felelős?
A dobossal [Amber de Buijzer – a szerk.] mi ketten vagyunk a hivatalos tagok, és én felelek a zenekar üzleti oldaláért, valamint a zeneszerzésért. Amber dobol, emellett egy kicsit többet foglalkozik a kapcsolatépítéssel – hát így működünk.

 

Hogyan írsz zenét?
Közvetlenül azután, hogy befejeztem egy albumot, nem tudok rögtön újat írni – időre van szükségem, hogy új inspirációkat gyűjtsek, különben az új anyag ugyanúgy hangzana, mint az előző. Ezért általában várok egy ideig – mondjuk egy évet –, és csak utána kezdek új dalokat írni. Az inspiráció pedig többnyire egyszerűen csak jön, csak úgy megjelenik a semmiből – és ez mindig működik.

 

Mi inspirál a zeneírás során?
Nos, sok black metalt hallgatok, szóval természetesen más zenekarok is hatással vannak rám. Ezen kívül más dimenziókból is jön ihlet, továbbá a Sátántól.

 

Amikor komponálsz, szisztematikusan dalról dalra haladsz, vagy inkább vissza-visszatérsz különböző dalokhoz?
Dalról dalra haladok. A riffek általában egyszer csak megjelennek a fejemben – felveszem őket, majd pedig szépen sorba rendezem őket.

 

Készítetek fizikai demókat, vagy szoftvereket használsz, mondjuk Cubase-t vagy Reapert?
Cubase-t használok a felvételekhez, meg laptopot.

 

Amikor komponálsz, és a gitársávot írod, hallod a dobokat is?
Igen, néha hallom; máskor meg számítógépet használok, hogy több inspirációt kapjak a ritmusokhoz, jópárszor meg az Amber által felvett részeket használom, hogy abból hozzak össze valamit.

 

Az a dob, amit te találsz ki, változik a zeneírási folyamat során, mire eljuttok a végső verzióig?
Egy kicsit, de jellemzően nem túl sokat.

 

Azért kérdezem, mert gyakran nehéz egy gitárosnak hallania a dobokat zeneírás közben.
Nekem ez egyáltalán nem nehéz, sőt, mindig van valami ötletem, csak fizikailag nem tudom eljátszani… a fejemben megvannak a dobok, mindenféle ritmus is megvan – csak eljátszani nem tudom őket.

 

 

Ilyenkor Amber-nek adsz instrukciókat, például hogy „itt egy kicsit több cin kell, ott meg több duplázó”, meg ilyenek?
Igen.

 

A gitárral kezdesz, és később jön a basszusgitár – egyáltalán, milyen sorrendben jönnek a hangszerek?
Általában megírom egyszerre a gitárt és a dobot – vagy csak gyorsan lejegyzem, ami sz eszembe jut –, és amikor megvannak a gitár- és dobtémák, jöhet a basszusgitárt. Nagyon ritkán van úgy, hogy először a basszusgitár van meg, és abból építek valamit – van, de ritkán.

 

A basszussáv a gitárból ered – tehát ugyanazokat a hangokat próbálod használni, mint az akkordoknál –, vagy pedig a basszus és a gitár teljesen független alapokra épülnek?
Függetlenek egymástól. Egyszerűen csak azt nézem, mi hangzik jól, ami néha ugyanaz, mint a ritmusgitár, de néha nem – ez tényleg változó.

 

Ez azt jelenti, hogy elég jó hallásod és jó elképzeléseid vannak a zeneszerzésről. Van zenei előképzettséged?
Körülbelül öt évig jártam gitárórákra, és két évig zenelméletet tanultam a konzervatóriumban. Nem fejeztem be ezeket a tanulmányokat… valójában gitártanárnak indultam, menet közben rájöttem, hogy igazából nem érdekel a tanári pálya – de ezalatt a két év alatt nagyon sokat tanultam.

 

Hogyan kezdett el érdekelni ez a műfaj, hány éves voltál?
12 éves koromban kezdtem el metalt hallgatni: Marilyn Manson, később Dimmu Borgir, majd az egyre extrémebb black metal iránt kezdtem érdeklődni, különösen az underground zenekarok iránt – de kevésbé underground-ok is jöhettek. Tizenévesként kezdtem, korábban nem igazán érdekelt a zene. Az érdeklődésem gyakorlatilag azonnal a black metal felé fordult, és a gitározás iránti vágy is ebből az időszakból ered. A gitár alapvető hangszer a metalban – úgy gondoltam, hogy érdekes lehet ezen a hangszeren játszani. Mindig jól érzés volt gitározni… az első években még nem voltam elég jó, de később fejlődtem, és egyre jobban ment.

 

Honnan jött a zenekaralapítás ötlete?
15 éves korom óta játszottam ilyen-olyan zenekarokban; mindig voltak barátaim, akik szintén zenélni akartak, és ők is a black metal iránt érdeklődtek. Mindig volt zenekarom, de az első pár nem jutott sehova, mert nem voltunk elég profik – csak próbálkoztunk, de nem jött be. Az első komolyabb zenekarom a Sammath volt, ahol gitároztam. Velük 19 évesen léptem fel az Under The Black Sun fesztiválon – ez volt az egyik első koncertem. Ezután alapítottam az Infestis nevű zenekart, amely néhány évig viszonylag népszerű volt Hollandiában és Belgiumban – de egy idő után nem működött a dolog. Ezután csatlakoztam a Nargaroth-hoz, majd később megalapítottam az Asagraum-ot.

 

Ha megnézzük a műfajt, a legtöbb zenész férfi, ezért kíváncsi vagyok, hogy hogyan tud egy női gitáros beilleszkedni ebbe a társaságba?
Remekül, csomó előnye van nőnek lenni. A rajongók nagyon érdeklődnek irántunk, mert nők vagyunk, így nagyon könnyű volt elindulni és a figyelem középpontjába kerülni. Az embereket meglepte, hogy létezik női black metal zenekar, és elkezdtek minket hallgatni. Természetesen amikor turnézunk vagy csak fellépünk, sokan próbálnak úriemberként viselkedni: segítenek cipekedni vagy más módon támogatni minket, szóval ez az egész inkább előny számunkra.

 

 

A barátaid vagy a családtagjaid eljönnek megnézni a fellépéseidet?
A barátaim igen, hiszen a legtöbb barátom ugyanazt a zenét szereti, mint én. A családtagjaim nem – a családomat soha nem érdekelte a black metal vagy bármelyik zenekarom.

 

Azért azt csak tudják, hogy a lányuk ebben a műfajban játszik.
Persze, tudnak róla, de soha nem jöttek el a koncertjeimre.

 

Miért kezdtél el érdeklődni a black metal iránt? Mi az az erő, ami vonz benne?
Mindig is nagyon vonzott a sötétség, és gyerekkoromban sok horrorkönyvet olvastam. Már nagyon fiatalon lenyűgözött a bal oldali ösvény, a sátánizmus. A szüleim gyerekként templomba vittek, és ezt mindig nagyon képmutatónak tartottam: ott voltak a történetek arról, hogy Isten mennyire megbocsátó, de ugyanakkor más történetekben ugyanez az Isten meg megbünteti az embereket. Számomra ez értelmetlennek és képmutatónak tűnt – nagyon zavartak a vallások. Mindig az ellenkező oldal vonzott, a lázadás, és a „sátánizmus” elnevezése illett mindehhez leginkább. Mindig úgy éreztem, hogy kapcsolatban állok valamiféle egyetemes erővel, ami nem Isten, nem a tömegeknek szól… és számomra ez a Sátán.

 

Az egyházat, a vallást vagy a kereszténységet utasítod el? Melyik ellen vagy tulajdonképpen?
Mindegyik ellen.

 

A sátánizmus nem egyfajta vallás?
Nem, mert sátánistaként saját erkölcsöt és értékeket alkothatsz. Nincs fölötted egy olyan hatalom, amely előírja, mit szabad tenned, és mit nem. A sátánizmus lényege az, hogy te magad alakítod ki, így teljesen különbözik attól a három birka-vallástól, ahogy én nevezem őket.

 

Mit jelent számodra a metal?
Számomra a black metal konkrétan a sátánizmus zenei kifejezése, valamint a Sátánnal való kapcsolatom megjelenítése. Nem nagyon hallgatok másféle metalt, úgyhogy maradjunk a „black metal”-nál.

 

És mit jelent számodra a zene?
Számomra ez egy nagyon erőteljes, absztrakt művészeti forma, amellyel mindenféle érzelmet ki lehet váltani, és olyan üzeneteket tud közvetíteni, amelyek sokkal mélyebbre hatolnak az emberi lélekben, mint a hétköznapi kifejezésmódok.

A tall woman with an amazing crown of ginger hair stands in the back row, listening raptly to Waldgeflüster performing at the Ragnarök Festival in Germany. ‘That can only be Hanna’, said I, and introduced myself. She got surprised; we chat a little – and few minutes after, as part of an interview, she tells how a churchgoing young Dutch girl abruptly transformed to one of the few black metal female guitarists.

 

Now you are close to finish a 10-stops tour. How tired you guys are?
Well, I’m not very tired, I’m just a little bit sad that the tour is over because it was really successful. There were a lot of people every day, and the merch sales were really good. Also the gigs went really well, so I actually would like to go a bit longer, but yeah, next time.

 

Do you like touring?
Yeah, a lot…

 

…is there any chance to extend the tour with a second leg?
Well, we will have another tour in autumn that will be announced soon but I can’t give the details yet because I have to wait for the official announcement. I’m also really looking forward for that one.

 

Last album, Veil of Death, Ruptured, came out in 2023. What about the feedbacks?
Yeah, I think it was received very well. I have not read a lot of reviews but we got booked live a lot, so that’s always a good sign, therefore I think it was received very well.

 

Are you working now on any kind of new material?
Yes, we’re working on a new album called Catharsis of the Fury and I’m planning to write eight or nine songs. I have five now so we are quite well on the way with that, and I hope to release it in the beginning of 2027.

 

 

I think it will be associated with the tour, I guess.
Yes.

 

What are the roles in the band? Who does what, and who is responsible for which phases of the creative process?
Well, it’s me and the drummer [Amber de Buijzer – the eds.], we are the official members and I’m responsible for the business side of the band and for the composing. Amber plays the drums, she does a little bit more networking and that’s how we are doing it.

 

What is your way of composing your music creation?
Well, usually right after I made an album I can’t compose a new one immediately because I need time to get new inspiration, otherwise everything will sound the same as the last album did. So usually I wait a while, a year or something and then I start to compose new songs and usually the inspiration just comes and it just appears – that always works.

 

Where most of your inspiration is coming from?
Well, I listen to a lot of black metal so of course I have influences from other bands. Other than that are the other dimensions and Satan.

 

When you are trying to compose something usually, you are elaborating song by song, or you return to different songs in an ad hoc way?
I write song by song and usually the riffs just start appearing in my mind – I record them and then I put them in a certain order.

 

You are creating physical demos, or you are working with any kind of software like Cubase or Reaper?
Yeah, I use my laptop and Cubase to record, yes.

 

When you are composing, can you hear the drums?
Yes, sometimes I can have drums in my mind; sometimes I use computer for that as well to get some more inspiration for the rhythms, and sometimes I use parts that Amber recorded to make something on.

 

Does the idea you had in your mind about the drums, changes during the composition workflow until you reach the final version?
A little bit, but not that much.

 

Often it’s difficult for a guitarist to hear the drums when composing.
For me it’s not difficult at all, I actually always have the drums in my mind but I can’t play drums very well physically… I have the drums in my mind, all kinds of rhythms are in my head – I just can’t play them.

 

 

In this case you give an instruction, like ‘here you have to use a little bit more hi-hat, there are more double bass’ and things like that?
Yes.

 

Are you starting with the guitars, and later on you follow with the bass guitar, or what’s your routine?
Yeah, usually I compose guitars and drums at the same time, or what I have in my mind I note it down, and when I have the guitars and drums, I add the bass guitar. Very rarely I have an idea for the bass guitar first and make something of that, that’s much more unusual.

 

The bass track is something which is derived from the guitar, so you are trying to use the same notes as the chords are, or the bass and the guitars have totally independent roots?
They are independent of each other, I just check what sounds good, and sometimes it’s the same as the rhythm guitar but sometimes not, it really depends.

 

It means you have quite a good hearing and good ideas about composition. Do you have a musical background?
I had guitar lessons for like 5 years and I was studying music theory in the conservatory for 2 years. I didn’t finish the study… because it was actually to become a guitar teacher and I was not interested in being a teacher, but I learned a lot from these 2 years.

 

When you got interested in this genre, what age you got interested in playing guitar, so how you started?
I started getting into metal when I was 12 years old with Marilyn Manson, later Dimmu Borgir and then I got interested in more and more extreme black metal, especially in some underground bands – and also some less underground bands. I started with it as a teenager and I was never that interested in music before. My interest in music started with black metal basically, and also the interest in playing guitar was from that age. Guitar is a very important instrument in metal, so I was thinking that would be interesting for me. I always had a good time when playing guitar. In the first years I was not good enough, but after that I was learning it and it went well.

 

Please tell me where the idea of forming a band is coming from?
Actually I was in bands since I was 15, I always had friends who wanted to play music as well and they were into black metal as well. I was always having bands but my first couple of bands didn’t get anywhere because people were not professional enough, and we were just trying to do something but it didn’t work out. My first and more professional band was called Sammath, where I was playing live guitar. We did the Under The Black Sun with them at 19 years old, so that was one of my first gigs. Then after that I started a band called Infestis which was a bit popular in the Netherlands and Belgium for some years, but in the end it didn’t work out. Then I joined Nargaroth, and later started Asagaum.

 

If you are looking at the other bands, most of the musicians are male, so I was just wondering how a lady guitarist can fit the genre?
It’s a beneficial situation. The fans are very interested in us because we are female, so it was very easy for us to get started and to get attention for the music, because people were very surprised that there was a female black metal band and started to check it out. And of course, when we are touring or playing live, a lot of guys want to be gentlemen, carry things for us or help us out in other ways, so it’s a great benefit.

 

Are friends or family members coming to check you out when you are playing live?
Friends are coming, because most of my friends are into the same music as me. Family members aren’t, my family has never been interested in black metal or in any of my bands.

 

 

They probably noticed that their daughter is playing that genre.
Of course they know it, but they never went to my concerts.

 

Why you became interested in this genre, in black metal? What’s the power that you are gravitating to?
Well, I was always very fascinated by darkness, and when I was a child, I was reading horror books and I was always very fascinated by the left hand path, satanism, from a very young age. My parents took me to the church as a child. I always thought it was very hypocritic because there were these stories about God being forgiving but then there were other stories about the same God punishing people… I just felt they are nonsense and hypocritical, and I got very annoyed by religions. I always felt to be attracted to the opposite side, to be rebellious, and the name ‘satanism’ was fitting for me. I always felt connected to some kind of universal power that is not God, that is not for the masses… and for me, that’s Satan.

 

So you are refusing the existence of the church, the religion, or Christianity? Which ones are you basically against?
All of it.

 

In this case, satanism is not a kind of religion?
No, because as a satanist you can create your own morals and values. There is not an instance above you that’s prescribing you what you should or shouldn’t do. The idea behind satanism is that you create it for yourself, so it’s totally different than the three religions of sheep I always call them.

 

What metal means to you?
Well… for me specifically black metal means the expression of satanism in music and the expression of my connection with Satan in music and in metal, in general. I don’t listen a lot to other kinds of metal, so for me let’s just keep it with the ‘black metal’ definition.

 

And what music means to you?
For me it’s a very great abstract art to evoke all kinds of emotions and to spread all kinds of messages that go much deeper into the human spirit than in a regular way.
