Adott egy fiatal, dinamikus német zenekar három stúdióalbummal a háta mögött, sok-sok zenei ötlettel és professzionalizmussal felvértezve – nem rossz kezdet, ugye?

 

Marci barátom áradozott még évekkel ezelőtt a Burn Down Eden-ről, és nagy volt az öröm, amikor kiderült: 2022-ben a zenekar turnéja során Magyarországot is érinti. A Riff-ben volt a fellépésük, és sajnos jópár zenehallgató számára ez az információ vélhetően elveszett – praktikusan azért, mert ezen a napon volt a Sepultura fellépése a Barba Negra-ban. Én mindkettőre mentem; némi logisztika és eszméletlen mázli kellett hozzá, hogy pont beeshessek a Burn Down Eden kezdésére. Ezóta, azaz 2022 óta folyamatosan dolgoznak a fiúk – fogynak a sörök és kopnak a pengetők –, és most jutottak el odáig, hogy a zenekar tizedik születésnapját ünneplő évben megjelent egy új single: február 29-én jött ki a Reap The Apocalypse című számuk.

 

 

Mit is halhattunk? Dallamos death metal és heavy metal kombinációját. A műfajokon átívelő zenei ötletek megvalósítása – a kijárt utak helyett – kockázatot rejt, hiszen számos olyan példát ismerünk, amikor az árnyoldalakat sikerült egybegyúrni a műfajok pozitívumai nélkül. De drezdai barátaink esetén ilyen nehézség nem merülhet fel; először is, náluk a klasszikus szerepek megmaradtak. Az egyik gitár szólózik – időnként még az ének részek alatt is –, a kíséret pedig a lehető leghagyományosabb értelemben kíséret: jellemzően akkordok, a szóló alatt akkordok vagy egyszerűbb dallamok. A basszus sem csak követi a két gitárt, hanem külön dallamvezetése van – de csak annyira, hogy erősítse a dal szerkezetét. Nem pályakezdők játszanak a hangszereken, William Deacon-Säck szólógitáros például civilben gitártanár és talán ez a háttér is segít a komponálásban, a konszonáns és disszonáns részek arányának helyes megtalálásában és a fülbemászó dallamvezetésben. A gyors és a lassú részek dinamikája tökéletesen harmonizál a zenei ötlettel, és egy nagyon kellemes végeredményt kapunk. A Burn Down Eden dalai – lásd a példát – elsőre is nagyon fülbemászóak, nehéz otthagyni őket, ugyanakkor mondanivalóban és miért zenei tartalomban sincs hiány, tehát a sokadik hallgatásra is talál benne új részleteket a hallgató.

 

Ez a single talán egy kicsit progresszívebb, mint a korábbi anyagok, ami izgalmas távlatokat nyit ki. Az egyszeri sajtómunkásnak időnként megadatik, hogy a jövőbe lásson: ez az anyag egy öt dalból álló album előzménye, és azon az anyagon további izgalmas tételek várnak a hallgatókra. A Burn Down Eden új anyaga áprilisban fog megjelenni; a részletekből a zenekarról nemsokára megjelenő interjúból és egy lemezbeszámolóból fogtok értesülni.

There is a young, dynamic German band with three studio albums behind their back, a lot of musical ideas and professionalism… Not too bad, is it?

 

My friend Marci got totally excited about Burn Down Eden many years ago, and went crazy when he learned that the band will be visiting Hungary in 2022 during their tour. They had a gig at Riff, and unfortunately, this information was probably lost for many fans, simply because Sepultura were playing at Barba Negra on the same day. I participated in both gigs; some logistics and also good luck was needed to arrive just in time for the start of Burn Down Eden. Since then, the guys have been working steadily, beers are disappearing can by can and the picks are wearing out, and they’ve just released a new single, to celebrate the band’s tenth birthday. “Reap The Apocalypse” came out on 29th of February.

 

 

What is their music about? What we have is a combination of melodic death metal and heavy metal. Crossing musical genres rather than following the well-known path is always a risk in implementing musical ideas, as there are many examples where the nuances have been blended successfully, but without the upsides of the genres. However, there are no such problems in the case of our friends from Dresden, mainly because they have retained the classic roles. One of the guitars is responsible for the solos, often playing melodies even during the vocal parts, and the rhythm guitar does the job in the most traditional sense possible: typically chords or simpler melodies, either during the solos or throughout the song. Nor does the bass just follow the guitars, it has its own melody, reinforcing the structure of the song. Honestly, the instrumentalists are not newbies by any means, as lead guitarist William Deacon-Säck, for example, is a guitar teacher by profession, and this background probably helps in the composition, finding a healthy balance between consonant and dissonant parts in catchy melodies. The dynamics of the fast and slow parts harmonise perfectly with the musical ideas, resulting in a very pleasant final product. The songs of Burn Down Eden, including the latest piece, are very catchy on first listen, at the same time, there is no lack of message and complexity; the listener will thus always find new details, even after dozens of listens.

 

This single is perhaps a little more progressive than the previous albums, which opens up new and exciting horizons. Lucky press workers sometimes get a glimpse into the future: this single is a prelude to a five-song release, which also includes other exciting tracks. Burn Down Eden’s new album will be released in April. We will reveal more details in an upcoming interview with the band and a review of the new EP.
